FIFTEEN ILLUSTRATED WEEKLY LECTURES IN THREE MODULES

Lectures will be delivered via zoom on Thursday evenings between 7-30pm and 9-30 pm (including time for questions).
FEE - £75 Per module / £200 for all three purchased
Optional extras to the course for those interested will include group visits to the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (London), V & A, the British museum, and one Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain centre of worship. Fees will be extra (to be determined later).
The course will include an optional written assignment (600 words on one of five topics given at the start of the course, for submission at the end).
All participants will be given a certificate of participation (minimum attendance required will be 80% (12/15) of lectures)
ABOUT THE TUTORS AND SPEAKERS
Dr. KANDIAH SIVAKUMAR (MBBS, FRCPsych, MA (SOAS), PhD (University of Thanjavur)
COURSE CONVENOR
Dr. Kandiah Sivakumar has had a lifelong interest in the Art and Architecture of the Indian Subcontinent and has visited many sites that show the richness of Indian Art and Architecture. He continued his interest under the guidance of Padmashree Dr. John and Mrs. Wendy Marr. He obtained the Certificate in Art and Archaeology at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, London and Completed an MA in the History of Art and Archaeology (South and Southeast Asia) at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
Siva later became a visiting Research Associate at the Department of Sculpture, Tamil University of Thanjavur, India and completed a PhD there. His Thesis was on The Architecture and Iconography of Tiruvarur Tyagrajaswamy Temple Gopuras and he has a series of Publications related to his interests.
He has been keenly involved in Temple restorations including Gopuras in the North of Sri Lanka. In the UK he has a keen interest in and has been a supporter of Cultural events such as Bharatanatyam and Karnatic music recitals and has been a compere for many such programmes. Siva is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (UK).
CANDIDA CONNOLLY
Candida Connolly M.Mus. PGCE, FTCL has worked at the Bhavan for nearly thirty years developing a greater understanding of Indian music and culture. She is a teacher and Western violinist and pianist. As a student of Dr Marr and learning Karnatic violin with Balu Raghuraman she gained a Fellowship at Trinity College looking at the application of Indian music in the western music curriculum. She was inspired by the Karnatic Saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath and found the access to Indian culture through the Western instruments a pathway to the riches of this ancient musical tradition.
She helped set up the Indian music degree course at the Bhavan which was validated in 2004 by Trinity Laban, this introduced students to both North and South Indian music and equipped its graduates to apply their individual specialism in the broader field of Indian Music in an inclusive way.
COURSE LECTURE - This lecture will be a speed tour through 3,000 years of the evolution of instruments in India and so also of the path of Indian music itself through this time frame. The influence of Indian music on the West and the West on Indian music will of course emerge in a fleeting fashion!
SANDRA SATTLER
Sandra Sattler is the convenor of the Arts of India and Arts of the Buddhist world for the Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art at SOAS. Her research expertise centres around the depiction of fierce goddesses in medieval North Indian temples and Sanskrit literature, and she is completing her PhD in this field in September 2023. Sandra holds a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree with
distinction in Indology from Goettingen University, Germany, where she was as a Research Associate for several years. She is also a Fulbright alumna (South Asian Studies, UC Berkeley) and an AHRC scholar. With over a decade of teaching experience, Sandra has delivered lectures on Indian art and culture at various institutions, including Hamburg University, Ghent University, and the V&A.
PRADEEPA SIVASANTHIRAN
Pradeepa Sivasanthiran completed the Diploma course in Indian and Art and Archaeology under Dr John Marr before embarking on her architectural education which included two years studying the architectural heritage of Nepal. She has traveled throughout India, Nepal and Sri Lanka and is a true enthusiast for South Asian culture, with a particular interest in religious spaces and traditional architecture. She qualified as an architect in 2019 and is currently completing a Master's in World Heritage Studies, with her thesis research looking at the symbology and uses of heritage at the Sacred City of Anuradhapura World Heritage site in Sri Lanka.
